Air Plant Care 101: Keep Your Tillandsia Thriving!

Air plants (Tillandsia) are some of the most fascinating houseplants you can own—no soil, low maintenance, and stunning shapes that add a touch of nature to any space. With over 600 species of air plants found across the world, each variety has its own unique look and care needs. This week, we’re putting the spotlight on three incredible air plants you can find on sale for 14% off at my Etsy shop: Tillandsia Medusa, Bulbosa, and classic Tillandsia varieties!

How to Keep Your Air Plant Alive & Thriving

While air plants are known for being low maintenance, they do need proper care to flourish. Follow these steps to keep yours happy and healthy:

1. Watering Your Air Plant

Unlike traditional plants, air plants absorb moisture through their leaves instead of roots. Here’s how to water them correctly:

  • Soak your air plant in room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes once a week.
  • Shake off excess water and place it upside down on a towel to dry completely.
  • In dry or hot climates, lightly mist them in between soakings to prevent dehydration.

Pro tip: Avoid distilled water! Use tap water that has sat out overnight or rainwater for best results.

2. Finding the Best Light for Growth

Air plants thrive in bright, indirect light—think near a sunny window or under grow lights. If you’re keeping them indoors, place them within a few feet of an east- or south-facing window. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their delicate leaves, while too little light will weaken them over time.

3. The Perfect Airflow

Unlike potted plants, air plants rely on good air circulation to stay healthy. Make sure they are in a spot where air can move freely—this helps them dry properly after watering and prevents rot.
